Theory of Change

Theory of Change

A contact-based stigma reduction initiative

We are excited to share the new theory of change developed by GREO for our initiative, Tackling Gambling Stigma. But what exactly is a theory of change? In simple terms, it’s a resource that explains how and why an intervention leads to change. It does this by illustrating the causal chain that leads from inputs through to expected outcomes.

Tackling Gambling Stigma is a unique initiative aimed at reducing the stigma associated with gambling-related harm in the UK. Launched in September 2022, it shares real-life experiences from a wide range of people with lived experience of gambling harm. These experiences come from those who have participated in gambling themselves and those who have been affected by another person’s gambling.

The new theory of change outlines the evidence-based components of our initiative and the logical connections between them. It shows how our activities will work in practice to achieve our goals. This framework is essential for guiding the monitoring and future evaluation of our efforts.

Developed in collaboration between GREO and the Tackling Gambling Stigma project team, this resource also draws on academic literature and stakeholder consultations. It serves as a valuable tool for organisations, groups, and individuals working in areas impacted by stigma and gambling-related harm.

By clearly articulating our approach, the theory of change helps ensure we are on the right path to making a meaningful impact in reducing gambling-related harm in the UK. We invite you to explore this new resource and join us in our mission to tackle gambling stigma.
